This question is familiar to many sufferers of heartburn, indigestion, and acid reflux, because the symptoms they suffer from is also often called GERD. So what is GERD? Well, GERD stands for Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease. All of these conditions cause pain in the chest area, and stem from stomach acid flowing up into the esophagus and causing the erosion of the tissue there.

So what is GERD going to affect?

While these conditions cause pain and discomfort to sufferers, they aren’t always the largest concern to those who have these conditions. Much worse conditions can arise, such as esophageal cancer. That is why it is important for people to find out “what is GERD” and to seek medical attention if necessary, or at the very least learn to control their own symptoms.

Very often, symptoms of this condition get worse when lying down for the night. Many of the sufferers of these conditions have learned their “trigger foods” which cause the condition to worsen. You will easily begin to see the correlation between which foods you eat and the worsening of the indigestion or acid reflux.

Treating the condition of GERD can often be as simple as watching which foods you eat. Avoiding starchy foods and those high in carbohydrates, especially after a certain time during the day, can be very helpful in reducing or even eliminating the night time symptoms of the disease.
